Hard seasons don't define you; how you rise through them shapes you. Courage is often quiet: getting up, asking for help, trying again.
When Timea Nagy was 20, she was living in Budapest, Hungary, and looking for a way forward. She answered a newspaper ad for temporary work in Canada. When she arrived in Toronto, she learned the job wasn't real. She was trapped by traffickers who told her she owed them a debt that didn't exist.
Even in the middle of that, Timea found people who would help. Employees at the club where she was forced to work helped her escape, and after three months she made it home to Hungary.
Home didn't feel safe either. Her family didn't believe her and was angry with her. It would have been easy to stop asking for help after that. Instead, Timea went back to Canada and kept looking for someone who would listen. She found that person in a police officer who believed her story, and together they brought charges against the men who had trafficked her.
Healing took time. Ten years later, at a publishing event in New York, Timea told her story in public for the first time. A former FBI agent heard her speak, and that led to her training police in the United States and Canada. She founded Walk With Me Canada Victim Services in 2009 and Timea's Cause in 2014, and she shared her journey in her memoir, Out of the Shadows (2019).
Her story shows something powerful: when the first people you turn to don't believe you, keep looking. The right person is out there.
Try this habit: Write down two or three people you could call on a hard day, plus one helpline. If one door closes, go to the next name on your list. You are worth the help.
